E-paper displays refresh content at a mind-blowing 7.5 frames per second
Papercast, the leader in e-paper based passenger information systems, has unveiled enhancements to its range of solar powered e-paper displays, including a complete display refresh rate of 7.5Hz (7.5 fps or 150mS), which significantly exceeds the limitations of other e-paper technology in this sector.
Papercast e-paper technology is in a category of its own. With its proprietary e-paper driver board and heavyweight processing power, engineers have been able to quickly render screen content in high resolution greyscale without any ghosting issues.
“Papercast is writing the next chapter in e-paper innovation by changing what’s possible with this technology. This breakthrough unlocks new capabilities that means we can now support animated and scrolling content,” said Robert Bicket, CEO at Papercast.
Whilst this functionality isn’t yet available as standard across its display products, it further demonstrates Papercast’s commitment to innovating its product range. Its new e-paper driver board was launched less than a year ago offering advanced and unique functionality, including local content rendering and partial screen refresh. This completely transformed the user experience, allowing content to update instantly without any flickering, while still maintaining ultra-low power consumption.
In most applications this level of performance is completely adequate, but as the company looks to move into other markets, the engineering team is pushing the boundaries even further. Developed originally for the bus transport sector, Papercast e-paper displays are also proving their worth in train and airline markets, as well as other non-transport applications.
James Sirmon, Chief Engineer at Papercast, comments: “Our displays update every few seconds, or as required, with static content. This is perfectly adequate for most of our customers, but we believe the opportunity for e-paper is enormous if we can move beyond existing limitations. We are excited to see how this plays out.”
Other recent enhancements include:
Robert adds: “At Papercast, we believe that nothing is impossible. This gives our customers the absolute confidence that when they choose Papercast, they won’t get left behind.”
Papercast e-paper displays were launched in 2016 specifically to transform the way bus operators provide passenger information at the bus stop. The unique attributes of e-paper make it ideal for outside use, with unbeatable screen visibility, even in direct sunlight. Couple this with wireless connectivity and exceptionally low power consumption, and the displays can be continuously solar powered – no power or connectivity cables are required. With increasing adoption around the world, Papercast e-paper displays are becoming the technology of choice for bus stops.
